Did you know that a study conducted by the Rand Corporation discovered that “over 75% of employers reported that veterans are better at solving problems than their non-veteran peers”? Hiring military veterans doesn’t just bring leadership, discipline, and adaptability to your workforce—it also boosts productivity and efficiency. Military veterans exhibit a strong degree of leadership while remaining compassionate toward others, including those that they do not know. The skills veterans gain during and after their military service enable them to thrive in the workplace.

Military veterans are highly educated and eager to learn. The majority of today's roles require advanced degrees that go beyond a high school diploma. While many recruits enter the military without a college degree, a significant number pursue education during their service. According to BLS.gov, “two-thirds of veterans had completed at least some postsecondary education”. This impressive statistic highlights the strong educational foundation many veterans bring to the workforce. It shows that they are knowledgeable and ambitious both in and beyond the workforce.

Military veterans have a great deal of respect for those around them. Respect is an important trait that separates good employees from exceptional ones. When one enlists in the military, respect for peers and commanders is instilled and cultivated at an early stage through a bootcamp. Respect is a key factor in workplace cohesion and emotional intelligence, helping veterans collaborate effectively and quickly adapt to new environments.

In the military, teamwork isn’t just encouraged—it’s a necessity. Veterans bring this deeply ingrained collaborative mindset to the workplace, helping teams function efficiently under pressure. In addition to respect, teamwork is also a skill learned in the military. As stated earlier, military bootcamp is a challenging yet rewarding experience where recruits undergo intense physical and mental training to reach the next level. The majority of these training sessions consist of team bonding and collaborative activities where recruits must work together to get a task done. These skills are exhibited in today’s workspace as we work closely with our peers to meet deadlines and project requirements.

These are just a few of the reasons military veterans excel in the workspace.
